What is purlin shapes?

Purlins can come in various shapes, depending on the specific design and structural requirements of the roof system. The most common shapes for purlins include:

1. C-shaped Purlins: Also known as C-purlins or C-sections, these purlins have a profile that resembles the letter “C” when viewed from the end.

They have a flat top and bottom with flanges extending outwards on either side. C-purlins are commonly used in steel construction and are versatile for various applications.

2. Z-shaped Purlins: Z-purlins, also referred to as Z-sections, have a profile that resembles the letter “Z” when viewed from the end. They have a flange on one side, a flat section in the middle, and another flange on the other side. Z-purlins are often used in steel construction where additional strength or rigidity is required.

3. U-shaped Purlins: U-purlins, or U-sections, have a profile that resembles the letter “U” when viewed from the end. They have a flat base with two flanges extending upwards on either side. U-purlins are commonly used in wood construction and can provide good support and stability for the roof structure.

The choice of purlin shape depends on factors such as the material used, the structural requirements, and the specific application. It is important to consult with a structural engineer or a roofing professional to determine the appropriate purlin shape for your roof system.
